Community and Mental Health

Marble Surface

Welcome to our website!

Mental health can often be overlooked and it is not always made a priority in daily life.  This can be a significant issue because mental health can impact an individual's ability to achieve their goals, as “Mental illnesses become serious when they are disabling when symptoms and dysfunction prevent people from achieving their life goals” (Corrigan, 2018, p. 847). While public perceptions of mental illness may have improved over recent years, there is still work to be done in fighting the stigma against prioritizing mental health. Misinformation and a negative association with mental health can create barriers to creating changes.  Every individual has the power to make a difference in the lives of others, and so finding a place within a community can be an effective way to improve mental health. It can be easy to get caught up in the struggles of busy life, and that is why it is essential that people use the power that they have to uplift others. On this website, we discuss how communities can impact mental health and the different resources that are available to those who might be struggling with their mental health.

Here are some of our personal experiences with community!

Communities are a significant part of everyday life; neighborhood, school, and family are just some examples of these communities. Although they can take different forms, everyone is surrounded by people in some type of environment. As a group of UNLV students who are a part of several different communities, we wanted to explore the impacts that people can make on each other's lives. More specifically, we aimed to highlight and examine the role of the community in maintaining mental health.
